It was formed in 1884.

It was named for the Black Range (Spanish: Sierra Diablo). It is an igneous mountain range running north-south in Sierra and Grant counties in southwest New Mexico, in the southwestern United States.

NOTE - Sierra County has a variety of rules that needs to be followed with regard to obtaining records. The office is only open between 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. from Monday to Friday PST. Those looking to request reports must also bring some form of photo identification. This could contain a driver’s license or state ID. A requester must also put their public record requests in writing in Sierra County.
