Crime Numbers
According to the annual crime report published by the New Mexico Department of Public Safety, San Juan County recorded a total of 5,569 crimes in 2018. Property crimes totaled 2,798 while 2,771 violent crimes were reported in the county for that year. The report shows there were 9 murders, 152 rapes, 84 robberies, and 2,526 aggravated assaults. Recorded property crimes include 726 burglaries, 1,822 larceny thefts, and 250 motor vehicle thefts.
The most recent five-year crime trend shows an overall increase in crime rate between 2014 and 2018 in San Juan County. Murder (350%), rape (186.8%), robbery (121.1%), and aggravated assault (80.6%) rates went up during the period. Also, burglary rate increased by 112.9% while larceny-theft and motor vehicle theft rates moved up by 62% and 155.1% respectively.

The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office provides criminal history checks for residents of the county. The New Mexico Department of Health provides birth and death certificates for San Juan County and the rest of the state. These vital records are only issued to the subjects of such records, immediate family members, and those with legal rights to obtain such records.
To request a vital record certificate, print and complete a Birth Record Search Application or a Death Record Search Application. Alternatively, write a request letter. This letter must contain the necessary information needed by the Health Department to process the request. Visit the Birth Certificate Letter Request Option or Death Certificate Letter Request Option page to view the information required. A photocopy of an Acceptable Photo Identification Document is needed to process the requests. The fee for each birth certificate is $10, while a death certificate costs $5. Fees are payable by check or money order made out to New Mexico Vital Records.

Are Property Records Open to the Public in San Juan County?
San Juan County property records are open for public inspection. The San Juan County Clerk serves as the custodian of records in the county. Requesters can inspect or obtain copies of property records upon a request and fulfillment of requirements for accessing such documents.
Where and How to Find Property Records in San Juan County
The San Juan County Clerk records deeds, mortgages, subdivision maps, and other property-related documents for the county. People can order copies of recorded property documents including recorded maps from the office of the County Clerk at $1 per page. However, certification of copies attracts an additional $1 per page.
Anyone can access these San Juan County property records in person, by email, or online. The online index contains information on recorded property documents dating back to June 1, 1977, and Plats and Surveys dating back to 1890. Images are not available online. To request copies of recorded property documents by email, requesters may have to include the book and page or document number in their requests.

The office of the San Juan County Assessor maintains an online property database search tool that allows users access to details of current property ownership within the county. Users can either use the basic, advanced, or combined search to find property information on the site. Thus they can conduct searches on the platform by providing one or more pieces of information about the requested account. For example, if they know the property owner's name, they can enter it into the Name field. If they know the situs address, they may also enter it.
