It was formed in 1920.
It was named for the town north of Mexico City where the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed, which in turn was named for Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, the priest who is known as the "Father of Mexican Independence.".

NOTE - There are various rules that need to be followed in order for Hidalgo County requesters to obtain records. Hidalgo County requester must obtain records between 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. PST from Monday to Friday. In Hidalgo County, some form of photo ID is needed to get records. Photo ID could be a driver's license or state ID. A requester must also put their public record requests in writing in Hidalgo County.
